Finding a suitable countertop for an oversized island is no easy task … as most stone slabs are supplied in 3m x 1.44m sizes. This means that if you have an island winder tha 1.44 meters or deeper than 1.44 meters you wyould have to make an alternative plan for a countertop.
Some of the engineered sonte manufacturers do however make jumbo slabs (Vicostone has jumbo slabs of 3.4 meter x 1.65 meter), but unfortunately only very few colours are available in these jumbo slabs limiting your choice of colour and finish.
Other solutions for oversized islands are:
1) Splitting your island surface into two levels
2) Combining two different surfaces
3) Using an all wood countertop (as wood can be made up to almost any size you want)
4) Splitting your island into two smaller islands instead of one larger island
Here are a few examples of possible countertops:
Using the same stone, but splitting it into two different levels makes for a visually interesting island and solves the problem of finding a stone slab in a specific size.
Multi level kitchen island
Multi level island using two different surfaces – dining part in wood adds warmth while the stainless steel surfaces are better suited for cooking and preparing food as it does not stain.
Another idea for split countertop where you want to limit the height difference between the two surfaces.
Wooden countertop option with stone insert for durability where food is prepared and where water is used.
Multi level isalnd with two different surfaces.
If your space allows, another great option is to rather divide an oversized island into two separate islands. It is also easier to move around two smaller islands than one large island.
Two different surfaces all on one level. The wood adds some warmth while also helping to overcome the problem of an oversized island.
Wooden countertops are available in almost all shapes and sizes and adds warmth and old world charm to a room.
Using two different surfaces but keeping everything on one level.
Multi level island with lower level doubling up as a dining room table – perfect for informal family dinners.
Multi level island with raised part for bar-like-seating. This also aids in keeping kitchen clutter out of sight by limiting what can be seen standing on the kitchen island.
